The on-going Phase 3 SYMMETRY test of elesclomol in metastatic melanoma is expected to have initial results in early 2009. Phase 2 studies of elesclomol in other indications are aforethought for the fourth quarter of 2008 and in 2009. Hunger Hormone May Protect Against Stress Induced Depression And Anxiety

Lead author and instructor of psychiatry at UT Southwestern, Dr Michael Lutter, said:
"Our findings support the idea that these hunger hormones don't do just unitary thing; quite, they align an entire behavioral response to tenseness and
in all probability affect modality, stress and energy levels."
Scientists like Zigman and colleagues already knew that fasting causes the gut to produce ghrelin, which is involved in sending hunger signals to the
mental capacity, and this has lED them to suggest blocking ghrelin as an approach to weight control.
But this new subject shows that if you do that, it could interfere with the body's natural way of dealing with anxiety and natural depression.
For the study, Zigman and his team commit "wild type" (ie not genetically altered in whatever way) mice on a calorie restricted diet for 10 days, which lED to a
four-fold increase in their ghrelin levels. Stress tests involving mazes and forced swims showed that the calorie restricted mice had reduced
symptoms of anxiety and depression compared to control couterparts that had been allowed unrestricted access to food.
The researchers then bred genetically neutered mice whose bodies did not respond to ghrelin and federal official them a calorie restricted diet as well, but under
tenseness tests their depression and anxiety symptoms stayed high; there was no anti-depression or anti-anxiety effect as there had been in the dotty type
mice on the low nutritionist's calorie diet.
Finally, Zigman and colleagues did a third prove, this time to explore social tenseness where normal wild type and genetically altered mice were exposed to aggressive "bully" mice every mean solar day (an access often used to study parallels of depression in humans).
Under stress atmospheric condition both types of mice had raised ghrelin that lasted for up to four weeks after existence bullied for the final time, only the mice that had been genetically altered not to respond to gherlin showed more social shunning behaviour and ate less than the non-altered mice, suggesting they had more depression symptoms.
A possible explanation could be the survival reward that is gained from such an effect over countless generations of evolution where the main
priority is getting enough nutrient to avoid starving to death. Zigman suggested that hunter gatherers needed to remain becalm in order of magnitude to hunt
successfully (or they could end being someone else's meal). Perhaps ghrelin induced by hunger leading to anti-anxiety gave them the edge over
their competitors.
These findings might also explain what happens in conditions like anorexia nervosa aforementioned Lutter:
"We're very interested to see whether ghrelin discourse could help people with anorexia nervosa, with the idea organism that in a certain population,
calorie restriction and weight release could make an antidepressant effect and could be reinforcing for this illness."

McQueen's Widow Urges Swayze To Live It Up
Steve McQueen's widow has urged ailing movie star Patrick Swayze to get the most out of life as he battles pancreatic cancer - because there's no guarantee medication will help. Barbara McQueen insists "miracle cures" won't save Swayze and could make what's left of his life miserable. Now 54, Barbara can still remember her late husband's cancer battle, which ended with his death in 1980 - and she is offering advice to one of her favourite actors as he fights the disease. Barbara tells America's Globe, "It (McQueen's cancer battle) was the worst thing I've ever been through... Tell Patrick not to go there. "It was weird stuff, very unconventional. They tried all kinds of strange things. "Patrick Swayze should kick up his heels with his beloved wife and have fun while he's fighting his desperate battle with cancer." But Swayze insists the treatment he is getting is taking effect and he is "responding well" to it. Swayze confirmed he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the beginning of 2008.

The dance music of Latin America has been introduced to the worldwide stagecoach by Trio Los Panchos. Best-known for their interpretation of the Cuban bolero, the chemical group performs a pan-Latin repertoire that includes Argentinean tangos and Colombian Cumbias.
Formed in 1944 by lead isaac M. Singer Hernando Aviles, background vocalizer Chucho Navarro, and requinto (modest guitar) player Alfredo Gil, the trio has gone through legion force changes. Aviles was replaced by Raul Shaw Moreno in 1951, with Moreno replaced by Julio Rodriguez Reyes the following year. With Aviles' return in 1956, the original triad was reunited until 1958, when Aviles was replaced by Johnny Albino. After a x with the chemical group, Albino was replaced by Enrique Caceres. Four age by and by, Caceres was replaced by Ovidio Hernandez, wHO remained with the chemical group until 1981, when he was replaced by Rafael Basurto Lara.
Announcing Gil's retirement during a television peculiar in Venezuela in 1981, Los Trio Panchos disbanded. She & Him Partners Zooey Deschanel, M. Ward Thrilled To Discover Their Musical Mate
When Matt met Zooey, it was, naturally, on the set of a movie. They bonded over their love of British singer/songwriter Richard Thompson and decided to make an album. This is how these things generally tend to happen.
"We met on the set of this film 'The Go-Getter,' and the director of the movie wanted us to do a duet for the end credits," Zooey said. "We did a Richard & Linda Thompson song, and that was one of the first things that was exciting about talking to Matt. We had a lot of the same favorite songs and favorite artists, and we admire people that I don't necessarily bring up in conversations, because most people have no idea what I'm talking about."
"I had heard Zooey sing before, in 'Elf,' and I knew she was a great singer, but I didn't know she wrote songs," Matt added. "Because you don't really expect actors to write great songs, and her songs are incredible. So that was one of the funnest parts of working with her: surprising people."
OK, so you should probably know that Zooey is actress Zooey Deschanel. Matt is musician M. Ward. They record together under the alias She & Him. Their debut album, the appropriately named Volume One, is a strummy, sunny ode to '50s country, '60s pop and '70s balladry. Deschanel wrote 10 of the album's 13 songs — tales of lost loves and broken hearts — and delivers them all in a breathy, bellwether-clear voice. Ward heaps on dusty, sun-dappled guitars and filters it all through a gauzy veil of production. The whole thing is w-a-a-a-y better than anything else in the actress-slash-musician canon (we're looking at you, Scarlett). You have every right to be surprised by that fact.
"Most music on the radio hearkens back to the '60s and '70s ... mainly older records that have been my biggest inspiration since I started making records," Ward said. "It turned out that [Zooey and I] grew up listening to a lot of the same records, so it was a fun challenge for me to get those atmospherics across in the production side of things."
"My favorite songwriters are mostly people that were writing a lot of music in the '60s and '70s. People like Carole King and Smokey Robinson. There are oh so many," Deschanel added. "So I sort of had those as, like, the ultimate songs in the world, in my head, you know? I had those people as the ultimate songwriters, so [the album] was like making a mixtape. Every day, when we were recording, I had, like, a new 80-minute mixtape!"
The duo had originally worked via e-mail — Deschanel wrote all the lyrics and music herself, and would send them to Ward for tinkering — but decided to put the finishing touches on Volume One in Ward's Portland, Oregon, studio. They released it on North Carolina's stalwart Merge Records in March, played a series of standing-room-only gigs at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, and played a handful of shows. And now, despite Deschanel's busy schedule (she'll appear in M. Night Shyamalan's "The Happening" next month), She & Him are already thinking about starting work on Volume Two. After all, this is how these things tend to happen.
"We're getting the ball rolling," Ward said. "It's too early to say, because we've just started."
"I'm just writing some stuff now for Volume Two," Deschanel added. "We've done some demos. We like to work in an improvisational way, so it'll have its own special personality."
